Saints Peter and Paul Lutheran Church

Worship Service Styles

Here at SS Peter and Paul Lutheran Church, we have three styles of worship, Traditional, Non-Traditional, and a mixture using the Creative Worship format supplied by our denominational offices. The differences in these services, are how they are "packaged". That is, they differ in the style and manner of presentation. It is extremely important to realize that the Gospel message presented at our services is the same.

The main reason we have these different styles of worship is to give people a choice. By having different styles of worship, people can attend whatever is most comfortable to them. The difference in the worship styles are listed below and are further detailed in the following paragraphs.

Traditional Non-Traditional Creative Worship
Communion Standard Walkthrough Walkthrough
Attire Formal Attire NOT required, but many attendees dress formally Formal Attire NOT required Formal Attire NOT required
Hymns Lutheran Hymnal (Blue Book) Praise Hymnal (Grey Book) Mixture
Liturgy Full, consistent Confession and Absolution on Communion Sundays Full, but changes weekly
Music Organ Praise Choir Mixture

The Traditional worship style is used on Sunday at 11:00 AM, following the education hour (10:00 AM during the summer). It is the most commonly used form of worship in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Communion is practiced in the common style of admitting Comunicants to the Altar to recieve the Sacraments. There is no formal dress attire requirement for any of our services. Most people that do attend this service do dress in a formal or semi-formal attire. The Full Liturgy is taken from the Lutheran Hymnal. All hymns are accompanied by the church organ. During this service occasionally the church Choir, Bell Choir, soloists, and special groups add to the worship. Sermons are conducted from the Pulpit by Pastor. The same message is delivered in all services.

The Non-Traditional worship style is used on Sunday at 8:30 AM, immediately preceding the education hour. It is slightly shorter than the Traditional worship and usually is 45 minutes in length. Communion is practiced in the Walkthrough style, involving a continuous line of Communicants that receive the Sacraments while standing, instead of kneeling at the communion rail first. The main reason behind this style is that the Praise Choir's instruments and sound equipment blocks much of the communion rail. There is sufficient room at the communion rail for those who wish to kneel for prayer after receiving the elements of Communion. There is no dress code for any of our services. Most people that attend this service tend to dress in a semi-formal or casual manner. The hymns are accompanied and lead by the Praise Choir. The Praise Choir is made up of a number of vocalists and a group of instruments including a bass, bells, clarinet, drums, flute, guitars, keyboard, and brass. The sermon is presented between the first row of pews and the Altar area. Pastor presents the same message in all the services.

The Creative Worship style is used on Thursday evening at 7:00 PM and is expected to be about 50 minutes in length. The service follows a printed liturgy (supplied by our denominational offices), but it varies week by week to keep it fresh and relevant. Communion is practiced in the Walkthrough style, involving a continuous line of Communicants that receive the Sacraments while standing, instead of kneeling at the communion rail first. There is room at the communion rail for those who wish to kneel for prayer after receiving the elements of Communion. There is no dress code for any of our services. Thursday night tends to be casual dress. The sermon is presented between the first row of pews and the Altar area. Pastor presents the same message that the Traditional service presents and vice-versa. Please note, we do not presently have any type of Christian Education available after our Creative Worship service.
